Watch the moment a rescued owl returns to the wild

Dear Friend,

There’s something incredibly special about Wild Friends — the state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitation and education program at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary that's dedicated to caring for injured and orphaned wild animals. While other animals at the Sanctuary may get more cuddles, kisses, and hugs, Wild Friends boasts a much more unique experience — one where love means respecting the wild nature of each animal in our care.

Every time I visit, I’m reminded of the beauty and resiliency of nature. With residents including cavies, tortoises, ducks, reptiles, seagulls, owls, rats, pigeons, and more, Wild Friends is a place where wild creatures find healing and strength — and return to nature stronger than ever. It’s why it’s my favorite part of the Sanctuary to visit.

It’s hard to imagine an owl covered in cement ever flying again. But at Wild Friends, hope has a way of taking flight. Every animal who comes here has a story to tell, but this great horned owl’s journey is one I’ll never forget. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch his inspiring journey home.

Watching this beautiful owl soar into the open sky was a powerful reminder that, with the right care, even the most fragile lives can find their way home. And that's only possible because of compassionate friends like you. Because of your continued support, the team here at Wild Friends can provide the care wild animals deserve — whether that means temporary housing and veterinary care until they can be released or lifelong care for those who cannot safely return to the wild.
