Learner Tien made sure he didn't let the moment slip away after what may have been his final chance to share the court with Gael Monfils on Wednesday night at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.
Following his three-set victory over the 39-year-old Monfils in Montreal, the 20-year-old Tien approached the Frenchman with an unusual request: he asked him to sign a tennis ball.
"First time asking for an autograph," Tien wrote on his Instagram Stories alongside a photo of the signed ball. |

Two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev is the second player to qualify for the 2026 edition of the season finale based on results at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.
The German, who won Roland Garros and reached the Wimbledon final, has now qualified for the year-end championships nine times. Zverev is one of three active singles players to have clinched the Nitto ATP Finals trophy more than once. |

Some of Denis Shapovalov’s biggest lessons of life on the ATP Tour have not come from match points or trophies, but from the people encountered along the way.
One of those moments came courtesy of Roger Federer in 2017. At the time, Federer was already an established icon of the sport, while Shapovalov was a teenager taking his first steps into the world he had spent his childhood chasing.
“Roger was a really big player who welcomed me,” Shapovalov said. “I remember going to Basel the first year to play there, and I was walking into the tournament actually, and there was a car pulling out… Roger basically stops the car, gets out and starts chatting to me and welcoming me to his city.” |

After three decades coaching on the ATP Tour, Jan De Witt still believes his greatest lessons are ahead of him.
The German has never owned a smartphone. He lives in a village of just 600 people, enjoys running with his dog or hiking with his wife, and describes himself as “an old-school, simple guy”. Yet as the game has evolved, De Witt has embraced the analytical side of modern tennis, recognising that data has become an essential tool in helping players unlock their next level.
It’s an approach that De Witt used to help guide Belgian Zizou Bergs to his first ATP Tour title in Eastbourne in June.
