THE IMPORTANCE OF MISTING FOR REPTILES, AMPHIBIANS, INVERTEBRATES, & BIOACTIVE HABITATS 1. Hydration Many species, especially those from tropical or humid regions, depend on consistent moisture levels in their environment to stay healthy. Misting helps maintain proper humidity, preventing dehydration and its associated health problems. Certain reptiles, like chameleons and geckos, prefer to drink from water droplets on leaves and enclosure surfaces rather than from bowls. Invertebrates such as jumping spiders also thrive when they can sip tiny droplets from leaves.
2. Mimicking Natural Conditions In the wild, many reptiles and amphibians inhabit environments with frequent rainfall or naturally high humidity. Misting recreates these conditions in captivity, making enclosures more comfortable and supportive of natural behaviors.
3. Supporting Bioactive Systems Proper moisture levels are essential not only for the animals but also for the living elements of a bioactive habitat. Live plants rely on consistent moisture to grow and stay healthy. Clean-up crew organisms, such as isopods (which are crustaceans), need humid conditions to survive and perform their role in breaking down waste. By regularly misting, keepers can help ensure that both animals and the miniature ecosystem within the enclosure thrive.

| The Zoo Med team was thrilled to take part in another year of the LA Pet Fair! Every year we say the same thing, but this year's event truly drew an even larger crowd than before. If you have never been, the LA Pet Fair consists of full-sized reptile, fish, and bird buildings, allowing guests to see their favorite animals while discovering new areas in the pet-keeping hobby. If you didn't know, Zoo Med makes more than just reptile products! We also offer a wide selection of fish and bird supplies, so of course we had to have a presence in all three buildings. |

The LA Pet Fair always has an amazing variety of vendors and animals on display. Some of the highlights from the reptile building included Shinisaurus crocodilurus (Chinese Crocodile Lizard), Oedura fimbria, (Western Marbled Velvet Gecko), and Neurergus kaiseri (Luristan Newt). The fish and bird buildings had their fair share of showstoppers as well, including some incredible Koi Angelfish, Zebra Plecos, Toucans, and Lorikeets. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the booths to say hello over the weekend; we can’t wait to do it again next year! |
