Dear UCS supporter,
The news has been hard to hear. Attacks on US environmental protections are running rampant, but we need your help to keep fighting back. With access to cleaner cars already threatened, we can’t afford for the vehicles transporting the food and goods we buy to pollute more as well. But the Trump administration wants to gut federal protections that reduce pollution from heavy-duty trucks and other vehicles transporting the stuff we get from stores or buy online.
Write to your members of Congress today and urge them to stand up for your right to clean air!
Not enough people know that the US freight system has an outsized impact on air pollution. Medium and heavy-duty trucks, including those transporting freight, make up just 11 percent of vehicles on the road but are responsible for 58 percent of on-road emissions of ozone-forming nitrogen oxide (NOx) that cause heart and lung disease. Nationwide, over 66 million people—nearly one in five people in the US—live near freight facilities and are exposed to toxic fossil fuel pollution from vehicles moving goods to and from ports, railyards, warehouses, and freight corridors every day.
