The story behind the name

1904

The year coffee first touched Rwandan soil. Planted by missionaries, perfected by generations.

1904: Rwanda single-origin coffee bag

In 1904, German missionaries carried a handful of Bourbon coffee seedlings to the Mibirizi mission in southwestern Rwanda. Those first trees, planted in rich volcanic soil at altitude and nourished by equatorial rain, took root in ways no one could have predicted.

Over the next century, coffee became woven into the fabric of Rwandan life: a source of livelihood, community, and resilience. Today, Rwanda is recognized as one of Africa's finest specialty coffee origins, with the Bourbon variety those missionaries planted still at the heart of it all. Our 1904 is named for that beginning.

From a mission garden in Mibirizi to the cooperatives of Gisenyi, 1904 honors the farmers who turned a colonial crop into something truly their own.

Why We Recommend 1904

1A true Bourbon heritage. Rwanda's original coffee variety, grown by Gisenyi cooperatives in volcanic highland soil that gives it a bright, complex sweetness you won't find anywhere else.
2Ethically sourced from sustainable cooperatives, supporting Rwandan farming communities who have turned resilience into world-class quality.
3Beautifully versatile. Raisin sweetness, bright lemon acidity, and a caramel finish that shines whether you brew it as a pour-over, French press, or espresso.

Brew it the traditional way

The Inyungu Ceremony

Rwanda's traditional coffee ceremony: a ritual of hospitality where beans are roasted, hand-ground, and brewed in a clay pot called the inyungu. Three rounds are served, each with its own meaning.

YOU'LL NEED
2–3 tbsp finely ground 1904 · 250 ml fresh water · a small saucepan or pot · sugar or honey, to taste
1Bring your water to a rolling boil in a small pot (the inyungu traditionally sits on charcoal, but your stovetop works beautifully).
2Remove from heat. Add your finely ground 1904 directly into the pot and stir gently.
3Return to low heat for 2–3 minutes. Let it simmer, not boil. Add sugar or honey now if you'd like.
4Remove from heat and let the grounds settle for 1–2 minutes.
5Pour slowly into your cup from a height to create a light foam. Sip, savor, and share. Traditionally, the ceremony is repeated for three rounds: awa (the strongest), kale (mellowed), and baraka (the blessing).
