Mangroves don’t get much attention—but beneath their tangled roots, some of the ocean’s most important work happens every day.

These remarkable coastal trees provide shelter for manatees, young fish, crabs, rays, birds and countless other species before they venture into open waters. They help keep our ocean healthy, reduce coastal erosion, absorb pollution and store massive amounts of planet-warming carbon—all while protecting communities from stronger storms.

But decades of reckless development, erosion, rising seas and increasingly powerful storms have damaged these fragile habitats—threatening not only Florida’s coastlines but also beloved wildlife, like manatees, that depend on these healthy ecosystems.

Ocean Conservancy is proud to partner with the Jupiter Narrows Conservation Alliance in my home state of Florida to restore a stretch of mangroves. In the next couple of weeks, we’ll break ground on a project to install limestone breakwaters around a series of mangrove islands in the lower Indian River Lagoon. These breakwaters will calm waves, stabilize sediment and create space for mangroves and seagrasses to take root and flourish once again.
