Let’s be honest: sharks need better PR.

For 50 years, they have suffered through one of the world’s longest-running smear campaigns. (We’re looking at you, Jaws.)

Somewhere along the way, we lost the plot and branded sharks as villains instead of what they really are: ancient, expertly evolved animals that help keep marine ecosystems healthy and balanced.

Sharks have been on this earth for more than 400 million years and survived multiple mass extinction events. But today, many face threats they were never designed to handle: overfishing, warming oceans, habitat loss and plastic pollution.

In fact, at least 34 shark species have been reported entangled in plastic debris, like abandoned or discarded fishing gear. And, scientists have found plastics and microplastics inside shark stomachs—including tiger sharks and hammerheads.

The real danger isn’t sharks but the never-ending threats they face.

Behind the dramatic music and Hollywood jump scares is an animal doing one of the ocean’s most important jobs. As apex predators, sharks help maintain balance in marine food webs and support healthier ocean ecosystems.
