Years ago, I convinced my besties to go to Mexico. Post-college life had scattered us across the country, and we needed a girls’ trip to reconnect. Despite never having heard of it, I became smitten with Zihuatanejo’s promise of gentle waves, a main street lined with artist’s shops, and no crowds. Best of all for our thin wallets, it was affordable. We soon found out why—we’d booked our trip at the start of monsoon season (rookie move!).
Sure enough, as we were finishing up a marathon gab fest over fresh-caught grilled fish and tequila, storm clouds rolled in. By the time we ran back to our hotel, we were soaked to the bone, laughing hysterically. It’s still one of my favorite vacation memories.
These days, “Zihua” sees more travelers as visiting the Mexican Riviera becomes popular. But Mexico has so many more under-appreciated cities with distinct foods, craft traditions, and (my favorite) coffee.
