TU B’AV: THE JEWISH HOLIDAY OF LOVE
After commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples on Tisha B’Av - the 9th of Av, the Jewish calendar gives us Tu B’Av, a holiday celebrating love, joy, connection, and new beginnings!
In ancient times, women would dress in white and go out to the fields to meet their future husbands. (We know, we know - our tradition was very heteronormative.) But today, love can mean so many things: romantic love, friendship, family, community, or even learning to love ourselves and our lives a little more deeply.
Tu B’Av falls on the 15th of Av, coming just days after the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. Perhaps that is the point: our tradition does not allow us to remain in grief forever. We make space for sadness, we remember what was lost, and then we begin to rebuild our lives again by opening ourselves back up to one another and to the possibility of joy.
In honor of Tu B’Av, the Jewish holiday of love, read a love story below from one of our Miller Introduction to Judaism students and see how Judaism became part of their journey together.
Happy Tu B’Av! โค๏ธ

SHIR AND DANIEL: A TU B’AV LOVE STORY
After October 7th, Shir and Daniel found themselves pouring their hearts into hasbara (pro-Israel public relations efforts) on social media, using their voices to stand up for Israel and the Jewish people during one of the most painful and challenging periods in recent history. At the time, Shir was living in Arizona and Daniel was in San Francisco. Through their advocacy, they began coming across each other's posts, connecting through shared thoughts, personal stories, and a deep sense of responsibility to the Jewish people. What began as admiration for each other's courage and conviction slowly turned into a connection neither expected.

Meet Rabbi Janice Mehring. One of our longtime Miller Intro to Judaism instructors, Rabbi Mehring has been teaching with the program for 14 years. Students consistently share that they leave her class feeling welcomed, inspired, and more deeply connected to Judaism. Known for her warmth, thoughtful teaching, and ability to create space for meaningful conversation, Rabbi Mehring helps each student engage with Jewish life in a way that is both personal and profound. We hope you'll join her this August.
Fun Fact: When she's not teaching, Rabbi Mehring sings with the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale and has been an OG quilter for over 35 years. ๐งต
