Fake and AI-polished applicants are flooding pipelines, and 91% of recruiters say they’ve encountered candidate deception. As Bloomberg reports, employers are fighting back with biometric face scans and even asking candidates to turn their webcam toward a nearby electrical outlet to prove they’re really in the US. Speed without verification is its own risk, and structured, defensible screening is how you win.

Zapier found success by throwing out the old hiring map

In today’s AI world, anyone can generate a polished resume, so resumes have stopped doing their job. Zapier flipped the script, using Greenhouse Voice AI to make a conversation part of the application itself. Candidates engaged deeply and felt seen, with 97% rating the experience excellent. Sometimes the smart move is creating a new route, not a stronger wall.

The Recruiter’s Desk: Stay at the helm of your tools

The Recruiting Roadshow is back for a new season, and the season opener sets the tone. Only 21% of candidates believe most employers use AI responsibly and transparently, so on a voyage where trust is this scarce, the recruiters who reach great candidates are the ones who keep the human element at the helm. In this kickoff episode, principal recruiter Julianne Streff shares three rules for steering the tools instead of letting them steer you:

Make the tool argue with you. Fatigue makes it easy to accept whatever AI hands back. Julianne pushes the other way, prompting it to “push back on me” and “challenge me on my bias.” The judgment you get out depends on the pressure you put in.

Keep humans on the context AI can’t read. A career break for a health event or family isn’t something a tool weighs well. As she puts it, AI is “probably not going to be as good at seeing” that, which is why a person stays in the loop.

Never automate the rejection. She’ll use AI to shape raw notes, but a person delivers the news, so candidates leave feeling “seen, heard and valued.”
