In the 1920s, French tennis champion René Lacoste believed players deserved something better than the long-sleeved woven shirts with stiff, starched collars that dominated the game. Seeking greater freedom of movement, he introduced a lightweight knitted shirt with a soft collar and short button placket. 

As knitwear--and a philosophy that valued simplicity over excess--evolved, buttons were removed altogether, creating an open neckline that draped naturally.
